Inspiring Men to Engage " CHANGE" Whose Family Walk on Eggshells - A Workshop for Professionals

This workshop is not a presentation of an academic framework for understanding Family Violence but rather an opportunity to learn in a practical presentation some of the tools, which David Nugent has implemented for the last 15 years with hundreds of men.

This workshop is for social workers, psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists, doctors and for anyone who council and supports clients enmeshed with Family Violence. At this two day Professionals workshop, participants will gain a solid understanding of the perpetrator’s behaviour of family violence and how the women and children in their lives are trapped.

This workshop is not a presentation of an academic framework for understanding Family Violence but rather an opportunity to learn in a practical presentation some of the tools, which David Nugent has implemented for the last 15 years with hundreds of men.

The methods shown will assist the therapist who wants to initially empower the clients to focus on the present and future circumstances rather than past experiences. By empowering the client to take ownership and implement change there is the immediate benefit of the client creating a safer environment for his partner and children. In this goal-oriented method; the symptoms or issues, the perpetrator brings to therapy are typically not targeted.

This approach will give the therapist a template that can be used with clients who do not take responsibility for their behaviour, blame others and continue to make excuses.

Presentation Title:

Removing the eggshells our families walk on: Anger management for men.

Submission type:

2 Day workshop – 12 hours

Outline of presentation:

In this presentation, David will demonstrate his successful blueprint of engaging men: inspiring men to look at themselves and take responsibility for what they can change rather than blaming, making excuses, or justifying their abusive behaviour. It is not about condemning men, it’s about empowering them to become better men, better husbands/partners, better fathers and role models in our community. The processes David presents are for any man who is after a better way of life for his partner, family, and himself: any man who wants to stop hurting his loved one(s), who wants to stop lashing out, and who wants to stop controlling or manipulating and is prepared to learn new ways and new skills to express himself. The same process can be used with women or teenagers, helping them to recognise why they feel they are walking on “eggshells” around their partner or their parents. David will illustrate how he empowers men to acknowledge that their current behaviour is not just destructive to themselves but also their partner, and most importantly, children involved in the relationship.

The cycle of violence is an ugly one, but, with understanding and re-education, it can be broken. Unfortunately, when men and women see the words ‘violence’ or ‘abuse’ they tend to associate both these words with physical violence and/or abuse and then disconnect that they are either perpetrators or victims of family violence. In this workshop, David will show how to present and use this cycle to engage clients and the processes to build on once the client has acknowledged the cycle is real in their lives. Once the cycle is recognised David will illustrate how this becomes the foundation to engage men to recognise and take ownership of the many forms of abuse which are equally as damaging as physical abuse e.g.: emotional, verbal, sexual and social. Often men justify their behaviour by convincing others it is because their “buttons” have been pressed or they simply have inherited a “short fuse” which only leads too them powering around their cycle of abuse. This blueprint will show the processes to empower men to identify they have a choice and by following four easy steps they can break their cycle.

This presentation will give participants a clear understanding of how this cycle can be used to engage clients and how it can be used as a foundation to build upon when working with men who present with anger issues. The methods discussed will show how the cycle can be used to encourage men to take ownership of their abuse without condemning them and too recognise the effects their behaviour is having on their partner and kids.

David will demonstrate how he empowers his clients to identify the many different types of behaviour they use and four easy steps which enables them to break the cycle and be in a better position to be a better role model for the children in their lives. This process is also a valuable tool to use when working with women and children who “walk on eggshells” and begin to blame themselves for why he is angry.

Before founding the Heavy M.E.T.A.L. Group, David facilitated men’s groups at Dandenong Community Health, Box Hill Community Health, and Relationships Australia for over five years. As well, he was a volunteer telephone counsellor for the Men’s Referral Service.

In 2004; knowing change is possible and understanding from his own life experience the struggle Men have with expressing their feelings and emotions, David decided to create and run his own program by founding the Heavy M.E.T.A.L (Men’s Education Towards Anger & Life) Group. Since 2004 David has given hundreds of men the opportunity to begin their own journey in behaviour change. David is based in Melbourne and continues to provide a counselling service for individuals, couples, and teenagers.

In 2008, David appeared with two families he has worked with on the ABC’s “4 Corners’ documentary.”

Since 2011 David has continued to run programs at two schools in the south-east suburbs of Melbourne and since introducing the program at schools, David has been overwhelmed with the number of parents seeking help with their teenagers. He currently works with many teenagers who wish to address issues around anger management, self-esteem, assertiveness, and dealing with parent conflicts.

In August 2014 David and the team at Heavy M.E.T.A.L. Program were invited to participate in creating the Documentary, “Call Me Dad”: a story about men who have perpetrated or are at risk of perpetrating family violence. At stake is the safety of children and partners, the stability of families, and the power we, as a society, have to intervene. These men are followed as they attempt to change and heal their most precious relationships and earn another shot at the title, ‘Dad.’ The film was aired on the ABC in November 2015.

In November 2014: David was invited to speak about working with perpetrators of Family Violence with Social Workers working in the south East of Melbourne at the Casey Hospital at Berwick.
