DAVID Nugent has spent years fighting domestic violence, but he’s about to take on a new, physical battle.

The 52-year-old cancer survivor will ride 200kms to help raise money for prostate cancer research as part of Melbourne’s Ride to Conquer Cancer on October 25-26.

And he’s holding a trivia night tomorrow to raise funds.

He said he was motivated to take part by a colleague’s breast cancer battle.

Mr Nugent said it would be the longest ride he had attempted — and he’s already felt the burn of his first 38km ride.

“The ride was really tough on my body and my legs were aching but I just thought of my colleague’s hardship,” Mr Nugent said.

“It all of a sudden hit me really hard when I walked into Peter Mac that I’ve got it, I’m not superman and it can get anybody.

“I’m lucky I survived it and I now want to help other people fighting the disease and raise as much money as I can.”

Mr Nugent, the founder of Heavy METAL, which works with perpetrators of domestic violence to try and stop them re-offending, hopes to raise over $5,000 for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

A barbecue fundraiser has been organised by Mr Nugent outside Officeworks in Narre Warren on September 6 and will hold a Trivia Night on August 16 at Caulfield Football Club.

“Local businesses have offered a range of products for us to auction off on the night, with all proceeds going to the foundation,” he said.

“Hopefully we can smash our target and get as many people to come along on the night.”
